UCU MBALE PARTICIPATES IN GENERAL MONTHLY CLEANING EXERCISE IN NYLON-MBALE CITY
Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mbale University College participated in the general monthly cleaning exercise at Nylon in Mbale City, reaffirming the University’s commitment to environmental responsibility, community service, and responsible citizenship.
The exercise brought together UCU Mbale staff and students who joined other members of the community in cleaning public spaces and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment. The activity provided an opportunity for the University community to translate its values of service and stewardship into practical action while contributing to the cleanliness and wellbeing of the wider Mbale City community.
UCU Mbale Team Takes Part in Community Cleaning
The UCU team was led by the Academic Registrar, Mr. Timothy Akampurira, and the Dean of Students, Rev. Daniel Okello. The exercise also attracted several Heads of Departments and staff, including Mr. Mutemere Joseph, who was coordinating the cleaning programme and is the Head of Computing and Technology; Mr. Henry Omache, Head of Business; Mr. Watuwa Anthony, Head of Social Sciences; and Mr. Mandu Jackson, IT Support Expert.
The participation of the University’s leadership, staff and students demonstrated a shared commitment to promoting environmental responsibility beyond the University campus. By taking part in the exercise alongside other community members, UCU Mbale contributed to efforts aimed at keeping public spaces clean while encouraging a culture of collective responsibility.
Education Beyond the Classroom
Speaking during the exercise, the Academic Registrar, Mr. Timothy Akampurira, emphasized the importance of staff and students taking responsibility for the environment and serving the wider community.
He noted:
“As Uganda Christian University, we believe that education is not only about what happens in the classroom. It is also about preparing responsible citizens who are willing to serve their communities. By participating in this cleaning exercise, we are demonstrating that responsibility and putting our Christian values of stewardship and service into practice.”
His remarks highlighted the University’s commitment to holistic education, where students are encouraged not only to acquire academic knowledge but also to develop a sense of responsibility towards their communities and environment.
Dean of Students Encourages Community Service
The Dean of Students, Rev. Daniel Okello, encouraged students to embrace community service as part of their holistic development.
He said:
“We want our students to understand that being a responsible citizen means taking care of the environment and contributing positively to society. This exercise gives our students an opportunity to learn through action, work together and demonstrate the spirit of service that UCU stands for.”
The Dean’s message emphasized the role of practical community engagement in shaping responsible students who are prepared to make positive contributions to society.
Student Leadership Joins the Exercise
The University’s student leadership was represented by Guild President Mr. Isaac Waiswa and Guild President-Elect Rev. Odeke John Charles, who actively participated alongside UCU students.
Their participation demonstrated the involvement of student leaders in activities that promote the wellbeing of both the University and the wider community. It also provided an opportunity for student leadership to encourage fellow students to participate in initiatives that address community needs.
Guild President Mr. Isaac Waiswa also encouraged students to actively participate in initiatives that benefit the community.
He said:
“As student leaders, we are happy to participate in activities that directly benefit the community. We encourage fellow students to understand that small actions such as keeping our surroundings clean can make a significant difference. We should continue working together to promote a clean and healthy environment both within and outside the University.”
Promoting Environmental Responsibility
The successful completion of the cleaning exercise demonstrated UCU Mbale’s commitment to its values of Christian service, stewardship, and community engagement. Through such initiatives, students and staff are encouraged to contribute positively to the communities in which they live and serve.
The activity also provided an opportunity for UCU Mbale to strengthen its relationship with the wider Mbale City community while contributing to efforts to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
