The Theology Department of Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mbale University College, under the leadership of the Departmental Coordinator, Rev. Daniel Okello Nakoli, in collaboration with the College Administration led by the Acting Principal, Mr. Vincent Kisenyi, organized a one-day retreat for finalist students at the College Library on 15th April 2026.
The retreat was designed to provide an opportunity for reflection, spiritual renewal, and practical preparation as the finalists prepared to transition into active ministry within the Church and the wider community. The retreat was held under the theme, “Being Anchored in Christ for Unity, Peace and Stability in Ministry.”
The event brought together experienced and inspiring speakers, including the Guest Speaker, Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicodemus Engwalas Okille, the retired Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, and the College Academic Registrar, Mr. Timothy Akampurira. Their messages focused on shaping the students into grounded, humble, and service-driven leaders who understood the true meaning of Christian ministry.
Addressing the finalists, Mr. Timothy Akampurira emphasized the importance of selfless service, reminding them that ministry was not about personal gain but about commitment to God’s people.
“You were not called to serve for what you received from Christians, but for what God accomplished through you in their lives,” he noted. He further reassured them of their preparedness, adding, “You had been equipped adequately. Go out and serve with confidence, and let your character reflect the values you had been taught.”
He also encouraged the students to uphold strong moral standards as they stepped into leadership roles within the Church.
“The world was watching you as ministers. Let your conduct, your words, and your actions reflect the discipline and integrity instilled in you,” Mr. Akampurira urged, emphasizing the responsibility that came with their calling.
In his address, Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicodemus Engwalas Okille delivered a profound message centred on humility and devotion to God’s work.
“True ministry began when you emptied yourself and allowed God to work through you for the sake of others,” he said. He cautioned the finalists against pride and self-centredness, noting, “Pride would distance you from God’s people; humility would draw you closer to them and to God’s purpose.” He encouraged them to remain steadfast in God’s Word and to embrace a life of selfless service as they embarked on their ministry journeys.
A reflective and hopeful message was also delivered by Rev. Daniel Okello Nakoli, the Theology Department Coordinator. He encouraged the students to remain steadfast in their faith and committed to God’s Word.
“As you prepared to step into the next phase of your journey, the message remained clear: you were called to serve with humility, integrity, and unwavering devotion. We therefore urged you to uphold the values instilled in you and to exercise resilience,” he said.
The retreat concluded with a ceremony recognizing outstanding student leaders, who were awarded certificates in appreciation of their dedication, commitment, and hard work throughout their time in the Theology Department. The recognition celebrated their contributions and inspired the entire cohort to continue serving with excellence, integrity, and a deep sense of calling as they prepared for ministry.
In his closing remarks, Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicodemus Engwalas Okille blessed the finalists, saying, “May you go forth as faithful servants, ready to impact lives and communities through Christ-centred leadership.”
